It looks like we missed the auditions for this production (will this raccoon ever get to play the role of Little Edie?), but it's exciting to see another production come together!

Eastern Suffolk BOCES production of Grey Gardens

Less than an hour's drive from the actual Grey Gardens, the Eastern Suffolk BOCES is staging their own production of the Grey Gardens musical. Details and photos are below; you can still catch some performances of the show.

It looks like the actress who plays Little Edie in the first act also plays Little Edie in the second act, and that the male role of Brooks has been changed to a female role, Brooke.

Thanks to Kevin for sending in this information and these photos!

A Grey Gardens-themed photo shoot, complete with raccoon!

Emily is sharing her Grey Gardens-themed photo shoot with us, and I'm quite impressed! Is that a real raccoon?

Grey Gardens

I have become absolutely obsessed with everything Grey Gardens after doing a photo shoot based on the house during the documentary.

Here are the images if you'd like to take a peek. I've been modeling since I was 5 and I've never been prouder of anything I've done. :)

Be sure to view the full photo shoot!

A doodle of Big Edie by artist Dawn Schreiner

Very nicely done! I think she captured Big Edie quite perfectly!

From Dawn Schreiner Illustration, by Dawn Schreiner, on May 12, 2010

Working on a doodle of little Edie, and did this sketch of Big Edie while researching. I found Grey Gardens a difficult movie to watch. The characters fascinating, eccentric and sad.

Grey Gardens hits Los Angeles

The Legends of La Cienega is an event in Los Angeles that includes window displays decorated by top interior designers, honoring design in iconic films. Our Grey Gardens made an appearance at Hollywood at Home.

It's a little more "Miss Havisham" than "Grey Gardens" to my eye, but I still like it!

Grey Gardens the Musical hits New Orleans, but...

Grey Gardens is not a sister act!

I fear for the quality of this production if the theater company thinks that Big and Little Edie are sisters.

Grey Gardens the Musical in Alabama: Not to be missed!

Alabama residents, if you've seen this, let us know what you think!

From al.com, by Alec Harvey, on April 30, 2010

Alabama premiere of musical "Grey Gardens" a showcase for three actresses

It all started with an acclaimed 1975 documentary, a look inside the eccentric lives of "Big Edie" Beale and her daughter, "Little Edie" Beale, cousins of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis living in a decrepit waterfront mansion that once was a place of upper-class soirees.

The documentary, like the estate, was called "Grey Gardens," and it provided the basis for a 2006 Tony Award-winning musical and a 2009 HBO movie starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange.

The musical is in the midst of its Alabama premiere thanks to the Dane Peterson Theatre Series, which brings the Beales’ story to vivid life with a wonderful cast led by Kristi Tingle Higginbotham, Carole Armistead and Leah Luker.

The three ladies all play the Beale women: Act I, largely a flashback to Little Edie’s supposed and ill-fated 1941 engagement party to young Joe Kennedy, stars Luker as Little Edie and Higginbotham as her mother; Act II, set around the documentary’s time in the early ¥’70s, finds Higginbotham as Little Edie and Armistead as Big Edie.

The three are spectacular, throwing themselves full force into characters who are at best eccentric and at worst living in the past and perhaps delusional. Higginbotham, especially, makes a remarkable transformation from the first act to the second, and her Little Edie is something to behold, especially when sparring with Armistead as her mother.

Director Dane Peterson doesn’t stop with his Edies. His strong cast also includes Brad Simmons as George Gould Strong, accompanist and maybe more for Big Edie; Thomas McDowell in the dual roles of Joseph Kennedy and Jerry; Howard Green as both J.V. "Major" Bouvier and Norman Vincent Peale; and Cecil Washington Jr., as both the Beales’ longtime servant and his son.

Even Lily Rucker and Gracie Vaughan, playing young Jackie and Lee Bouvier, are delightful.

The tuneful score covers a variety of styles, and highlights on opening night included Higginbotham’s plaintive "Will You?" and funny "The Revolutionary Costume for Today" and Armistead’s touching "Jerry Likes My Corn."

But this "Grey Gardens" isn’t built on performances alone. Gary Weatherly’s set shows Grey Gardens in all its splendor and squalor, and conductor Jay Tumminello makes sure the music is compelling but not overpowering.

There were some sound problems on Thursday, but they registered very little in the grand scheme of things.

"Grey Gardens" is a triumph, and it’s well worth paying a visit.
