PBS's "Independent Lens" Goes Backstage in December
PBS's "Independent Lens" Goes Backstage in December Series Presents Jon Else's "WONDERS ARE MANY: The Making Of Doctor Atomic" and East of Doheny and Albert Maysles' "GREY GARDENS: From East Hampton To Broadway"
This December, the Emmy® Award-winning PBS series "Independent Lens," (http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/guide.html) hosted by Terrence Howard, takes viewers behind the scenes of two major artistic productions -- the acclaimed opera Doctor Atomic ("WONDERS ARE MANY: The Making Of Doctor Atomic") and the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Grey Gardens ("GREY GARDENS: From East Hampton To Broadway").
Premiering on Tuesday, December 16, is "WONDERS ARE MANY: The Making Of Doctor Atomic," in which veteran filmmaker Jon Else goes behind the curtain to follow the collaborative process of composer John Adams and director Peter Sellars as they work to forge the tale of J. Robert Oppenheimer into a music drama like no other: the strange and beautiful Doctor Atomic. As Sellars and Adams struggle to create high art from the most savage weapon in history, the film explores the spectacular and unnerving 60-year history of nuclear weapons.
Captured in the landmark 1975 Maysles' Brothers film "Grey Gardens," the indomitable Edith Beale and her daughter, Edie, aunt and cousin to Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, were revealed to have a most unique and engaging mother-daughter relationship, built upon powerful interdependence, quirky eccentricity, courage, devotion and love. Living in squalor in a rundown Hamptons mansion, their indomitable spirit soon catapulted them to cult icon status. Three decades later, the Beales received the ultimate tribute: being portrayed on Broadway. Combining a backstage look at the creative process, lavish clips from the original film, and insightful interviews with the Broadway show's creators and cast, Albert Maysles, and a host of Beale authorities, devotees and cultural commentators, "GREY GARDENS: From East Hampton To Broadway," premiering on Tuesday, December 23, reminds us of the power of the Beales' story to arouse a multitude of emotions even decades later. "GREY GARDENS: From East Hampton To Broadway" is a film by East of Doheny and Albert Maysles.

I did a holiday gift guide for Grey Gardens fans back in 2007, but, within the past year, there have been a number of new items that have finally been made available. So, without further ado, here's a holiday gift guide for 2008!
Were your friends introduced to Grey Gardens when it aired on TV? Or perhaps they got it through Netflix? Then they'll need the DVD of it. Regular viewing is the only way to get the quotes down verbatim.
The next step after having the Grey Gardens DVD is to have The Beales of Grey Gardens. It's not so much a separate film as it is a collection of outtakes, but it's still very fun to watch. Edith and Edie are as wonderful as they always are, and you get to see quite a bit more of Jerry Torre and Lois Wright as well.

If your friends don't have either Grey Gardens or The Beales, both DVDs are available as a set (although the video quality isn't as good in the set).

The Beales of Grey Gardens
Criterion Collection DVD Set
This next entry may surprise you. So you already have the Criterion Collection DVD of Grey Gardens but Buster is recommending that you get the UK edition as well? Absolutely. The DVD features are different, and the image quality is slightly better. And the booklet that comes with this DVD is extraordinary. You need this as well.
And, yes, we US customers can order from Amazon.co.uk and they will ship the DVD to the US and it will play on our DVD players. I was shocked, but in a good way!
I've requested Grey Gardens-inspired decorating tips from time to time here, and here's my tip to you: A poster from the documentary. You can get reproductions from Amazon for real cheap. I always hesitate to buy art for friends, but if they hate it, they can hang it in their attics over a pile of empty Wonder Bread bags. (And Wonder Bread would be a great accessory to this gift!)

This book is finally available! It's big, it's full of photos, and it's interesting. Some of the photos have been blown up to the point of graininess, and the book doesn't explain or describe much. It also doesn't have much about Big Edie or the house, and there is nothing about Lois Wright or Jerry Torre in the book, or the Maysles. Still, it's a pleasure to browse.
If your friends are readers, or even if they're not, Lois Wright's book about life at Grey Gardens is a fascinating read.
The Grammy-nominated CD for the Grey Gardens musical is a great choice for friends who were exposed to the Edie Beales through the musical.
(There are also a Grey Gardens Songbook by Scott Frankel & Michael Korie and Grey Gardens: The Complete Book and Lyrics of the Broadway Musical by Doug Wright for musically-inclined fans.)
A reproduction of Edie's brooch, as seen in Grey Gardens.
An interesting little book, perhaps with too much about the author himself, but it's truthful and contains some rare Edie gems.
This CD is like a bonus feature on a DVD, only longer! It's Edie herself, and she's as wonderful as you would expect her to be.
There is plenty of great fan-made art available. This includes giclée prints from Pacifico Palumbo, prints by Bruce Lennon, and coloring books.
McKenna's book of interviews has a real gem in it: an interview with Little Edie Beale! It's accompanied by a paper doll-inspired illustration of Edie.
Liliana Greenfield-Sanders made this film about her love of Grey Gardens. My favorite part is the interview with Sally Quinn, which is very entertaining. Yet this raccoon didn't understand the performance art section of the film.
This is a Maysles scrapbook, not a Grey Gardens scrapbook. There is not much Edie in it, and the printing is terrible. Only recommended for those who are fans of Maysles films in addition to Grey Gardens.
Also, for those of us obsessive fans, there are all of the Edies' cultural references.
Finally, what to get the Grey Gardens fan who has everything? Liver pate!
